In today’s pirate theme party blog, I will continue the adventures of Guy, Captain Wellington, Petey and the Parrot Pirates. In the last episode, Petey narrowly avoided a grisly fate by surprisingly stumbling across a boar.
When Petey woke up he was very groggy. He could here the sound of drunken singing in the background and the smell of roasted meat was everywhere. The food looked delicious, and although most birds were not meat eaters, Petey loved the taste of roasted meat. “I saved ya some meat!” Guy said excitedly. “Boy, if you hadn’t found that boar, I’d have been tempted to eat my shoe.” Petey looked at the meat, then back up to Guy. He needed to clue this idiot pirate in on what that treasure was really about, but was also famished. All that flying had siphoned off the last of his food for that day and was now beginning to dip into his fat tummy. He decided it could wait. Filling his stomach was his first priority. He started to dig into the pork when he realized that the crew must have a great cook. There was a limited amount of resources but somehow the cook had managed to make this a succulent feast. So much for the poor pig.

This is the sixth installment of the pirate party idea blog: Captain Wellington and the Parrot Pirates. Come back to the pirate party idea blog often to get updates on this adventure.
Guy knew there was no way he was going to get the treasure out of the cave by himself, and he certainly couldn’t enlist the help of his new friend Petey. Besides, the Rita was a long way off from being repaired, that is if they could actually do the repairs. He decided to head back and show the crew his amazing new bird. Petey walked beside Guy for a while, but then grew tired. Guy was getting tired of having to wait for the bird, so he finally reached down and picked him up. He set him on his shoulder and continued to trek back to the camp. Apparently Petey was very pleased with this. He started to whistle old pirate tunes while swaying back and forth on Guy’s shoulder. It was a bizarre scene. As they approached the camp, Guy looked up at Petey and said “Remember our deal Petey. You ain’t gonna say nothin to the crew about the treasure, right? If you did, I’d have to roast you up and eat you like a chicken!” At this Petey trembled a bit, then replied, “Aye aye Guy. Mums the word for Petey.”

As Guy entered the cave he heard the faint a faint rustling. The cave was dark and damp, but there was enough light to explore. He took a few steps forward and dropped his musket. “Arrgg, that hurt!” The next thing he knew, Guy was surrounded by a cloud, a black cloud. The wind was whipping up and the cloud had a terrible shrieking noise. “Bats …. Bats!” Guy started to run but tripped. The bats seemed to be bent on getting out of the cave, but why? Guy covered his head and fearfully waited out all the bats. Finally, the cave was clear and he stood up to figure out where he was. There, in the corner, was the faint reflection of light.
He carefully walked toward it, being careful not to trip again. As he reached the source of the light, he realized it was a reflection of the light outside. He squinted his eyes and carefully approached the object. “What could it be?’ he wondered. And then he saw it. It was a sword, and not just a basic cutlass. This one was encrusted with jewels. Diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. It was still very dark and he could only see the reflection from the gold and jewels of the sword. As he reached for it, his hand bumped into something wooden. He felt around the object with his hands until he suddenly realized what it really was. “A chest” he exclaimed! He fumbled around for the hinges and tried to open it. “No luck!” There, on the ground, something metal. A key! Guy nervously took the key in his hand and guided it to the keyhole. He slowly turned the lock. “Click.” It was open! He carefully opened the chest. “Of all the treasures of the sea! I can’t believe it.”
Come back to the pirate party idea blog soon to find out what Guy found inside the amazing treasure chest!!!

This is the second chapter of the pirate party idea blog, Captain Wellington and the Parrot Pirates. Check the Pirate Party Idea blog occasionally for updates. Enjoy the story.
Stranded! Arrgg! I can not believe this is happening Wellington thought. We have barely enough provisions for the crew and were very low on water. At least the island has plenty of fruit. I can’t remember the last time I had fresh fruit, and you just can’t find oranges in London. Well, I better get some of the crew to search the island for water. Maybe we can find a wild boar. “Guy, Guy!” “Come on over here!” “We must find us some provisions.” “Go to the west side of the island and keep your eye out for anything we can use.” “Make sure you bring your musket in case you run into any boars.” “Get a move on it Guy!” “Aye aye skipper.”
“Where am I supposed to find a boar,” Guy said. “I can kill me a pirate or one of them scoundrels from the East India Trading Company, but a boar?” “They scare me!” “And why the west side of the island?” “Well look at that ….. shiver me timbers …. it’s a cave.” Maybe I can find me somethin in there.
Tune back in to pirate party idea blog to see if Guy finds anything in the mysterious cave.

Stories about pirates are almost always centered on male figures and characters. The role of women in these stories usually concerns a damsel in distress. We have done our research here, and found a few stories that do not fit that mold. Women pirates were few and far between, but those few characters would make a lasting impression on the history of piracy. For your daughter’s pirate birthday party, why not consider lettering her dress up as Emmy Tot, The Scottish born pirate was actually born into aristocracy. The town where she grew up in now has a figure of her in the center of the city. She is shown to be standing and holding a sword that covered in blood! In the other hand is a severed human head! Apparently people thought she was pretty tough.
When she was a young woman, she happened to attend a party where she met the captain of the Amsterdam, Jan Van der Goot. Van der Goot was absolutely smitten with Emmy, and was determined to have her. Emmy had no interest in the captain, but unfortunately, she was to be his one way or another. While she slept at home, four men broke into her house and kidnapped her. They spirited her off to the Amsterdam where she awaited her fate. Not what I would call the ideal pirate birthday party. Van der Goot showed up in her cabin completely drunk. He passed out on the bed and was soon deeply asleep. Emmy seized the moment. She grabbed a dagger and stuck it in his heart.
She had killed her captor, but was not quite finished. She cut off his head with a sword and took both the head and the sword up to the crew. There she demanded that they turn the ship back. The crew was stunned by her audacity, and did what they were told. The Earl of Eglinton was astonished by Emmy’s bravery and decided to make a tribute to her by including her picture on his coat of arms. The picture was of Emmy holding a sword and a severed head, and it remains like that to this day. For more pirate birthday party ideas, check our ebook out. When you try to come up with a pirate party idea, remember that pirates were well known for their fighting skills. Pirates had to be adept in the art of ballistics, marksmanship, and fencing. There weapons were long range, medium range and short range. Their long range weapons were cannons, and some ships carried as many as forty of them! These were mainly used for deterrence rather than actual fighting. The pirates were attempting to capture vessels, and not sink them. These cannons were able to shoot large cannon balls for great distances and could create absolute havoc! Their guns were their medium range weapons. If the ships were close enough, pirated could try to pick off one another with them in hopes of thinning out the crowd before final boarding. There were all kinds of guns including rifles, shotguns and muskets. I will cover more about these in future pirate party idea blogs. Finally, there were the swords! No pirate would be complete without one, and they had to be extremely skilled with these weapons. Many of the casualties in a pirate fight were victims of the sword, so proper handling and techniques were crucial. Next up, we’ll discuss the weapons in more detail.

Ocean currents were not discovered until the sixteenth century. During that time, there was a man who served the government as a mail carrier. At some point, probably while distracted while he was thinking of a pirate party idea, he had an accident that left him disabled and unable to walk without much trouble. He wanted to continue to work for the government, but could not do it in the same capacity. Eventually, he agreed to work as a navigator of sorts for government ships. Fate had smiled upon him because he was going to contribute greatly to the science of oceanography. Once on board, he took an interest in oceanography. He started to notice that the first leg of trips from America to Europe were much shorter than trips from Europe to America. Perplexed, he took note of the matter. He started observing and noting the speed of the ship at different points of the trip, and came up with a series of charts. Meanwhile, a man by the name of Ben Franklin …… yes, THAT Ben Franklin, took notice of a conversation in a bar while contemplating his own pirate party idea. The men were quizzing each other as to why it was quicker to reach Europe than it was America. Franklin intently listened to this mystery as these men started discussing a notion that there was a river in the ocean! Franklin was a man of many skills, and an excellent scientist, so he decided to take this matter to task. With the help of the current charts that were made possible by the government navigator I spoke of earlier, Ben Franklin started to map out the Gulf Stream current. It was an astonishing discovery, and one of many contributions from the man. More on history and a pirate party idea to come.

Ahh, good ole King Neptune! I still remember the day when I became a shellback back in April of 1989. The Shellback Initiation Ceremony makes for a great pirate theme party idea. The tradition has lasted for centuries, and takes place onboard all U.S. Navy ships that cross the equator. Shellbacks are sailors who have previously been tested by the trials during a Shellback Initiation Ceremony. The other sailors, also known as slimy pollywogs, must endure a days worth of torture and humiliation. The pirate theme party includes the usual cast of characters, including scallywags like King Neptune and his trusted trident, Davey Jones, and the Pollywog Queen. During the ceremony, the ship even flies the famed Jolly Rogers skull and crossbones flag! Arrgggg. The Shellbacks all dress up as pirates and carry with them their famed “shellayle,” which is a piece of cut up fire hose used to discipline any slimy pollywog that has gotten out of line. The best part about the ceremony is that there is no concept of rank. Just like the pirates of old, the ship is run on a pure democracy. It doesn’t matter if you are brand new to the fleet or a salty dog of the seas, if you have never crossed the equator, you must undergo the rigor and horror of Shellback Initiation! The slimy pollywogs must pass through a gauntlet of shellbacks and make it out alive at the other end. For the entire day, the only way they can get around is on their hands and knees. Their clothes mark them as pollywogs and display whatever shellback owns the poor soul. The obstacle course is grueling, and includes tunnels of trash, a pool of dirty water, and even a stockade for the worst offenders. If properly navigated, the slimy pollywog is magically transformed into a trusted shellback, and becomes a member of the famed Sons of Neptune! This might be a bit rash for a run of the mill pirate theme party, but for those salty sailors out there, it is the law of the seven seas!

With all the publicity following the release of Disney’s newest installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, people have become more and more interested in the real history behind pirates. Most people are interested in the Golden Age of piracy that spanned the 15th through the 17th centuries. Why shouldn’t they be? There is something very appealing about that era, and the public is enthralled with notorious characters like Black Beard, Captain Hook, and Jack Sparrow. Their swashbuckling demeanor and rebellious attitudes appeal to all of us. It’s always fun to read stories about these men, or look up a pirate birthday party idea, but the real truth is that piracy is not joke. At Pirate Theme Party, we aim to create and provide ideas for all those pirate lovers, but we also want to give some historical background and perspective on the subject. From time to time, we will research and write a short report on piracy and not just piracy during the Golden Age. As long as there have been ships on the water, pirates have raided the ocean. That is true today as well, where piracy still plagues many spots around the world. Within the last few years, the crime of piracy has exploded. These pirates do not carry around swords and look for Davey’s locker. These modern day pirates carry AK-47’s and rocket propelled grenades! They will go after anything from a private vessel, cargo ship, or even a cruise ship. Just a couple of years ago, a cruise ship narrowly evaded capture from pirates of the coast of Somalia. In fact, Somalia is well known to be a danger to cruise and cargo ships. Other areas include Iraq, South America, Western Africa, Bangladesh, Indonesia, the South China Sea, and the Malaccan Straits. In particular, the Malaccan Straits are an area that is very susceptible to piracy. The Straits are a very narrow passage that connects the Pacific and Indian Ocean’s, and it also is the main access point for central Asia. Because of this, The Malaccan Straits are the expressway for about 1/3 of the world’s goods, and the area makes an attractive target for thieves. As you can see, piracy is a very real menace. At Pirate Theme Party, we want you to enjoy your experience and perhaps gain a good pirate birthday party idea, but we also hope you keep in mind what piracy is really about! Enjoy and Arrggghhh!
